I have a question regarding home wiring and rewiring.?

I live in an old(40’s era) home that still has knob and tube wiring structure(mostly). The previous owners did a little update about 25 years ago in the kitchen area. Numerous problems: The 220 outlets for my window ac’s have recently stopped working. I had a service check and the old breakers were hot, but no power to the outlets. I get some of the other breakers that want to flip often too. (do breakers really degrade each time they flip?)
I can’t afford a full rewire right now because we just finally had the house reroofed(2 years after Katrina), and I had to have those holes fixed before I could turn to inside repairs.
For the 220 outlets, would yould suggest running external lines; conduit, from the service box for a temp fix; 1 year, before I can start to be able to afford major wiring?
How doyou find someone who can do a job like that?

Vernon, call a couple electricians and get a price and an idea of all the work that needs to be done. Talk with them about doing the work in stages as you can afford it. I am an electrical contractor and I work with people that way all the time. A good contractor can help you out with getting the important things done first, without doing temporary work which will be wasteful in the long run. There is seldom a need to pay for temporary work which will just be tore out later. Have the work done right the first time. Don’t try to save money by hiring an unqualified handyman. Get a qualified and licensed electrician. They are cheaper in the long run.
