How To Be Prepared When Natural Disaster Strikes Earthquakes, Hurricanes etc

We never know when nature will turn on us and make us lose our homes, loved ones and town. The Tsunami and Earthquake that occurred in Japan is enough to scare us and make us think are we next. No one was prepared for a disaster like this and who can be, you never know when or how mother nature will affect your town or your life.

In Japan right now there is a nuclear threat and some have been exposed from the radiation, foods such as vegetables, milk and water have also been affected. Radiation is when there is a energy transmitted through the air breaking down human DNA and harming tissues. There are no symptoms at first when being exposed to these deadly chemicals. The side effects are diarrhea, birth defects, skin peeling, blisters of the skin, vomiting, cancer and hair loss.

These people were not prepared, it is difficult to be ready for Tsunami it’s going to destroy anything in its path no matter what you do, but you can save your life if there is enough time to be notified. There are over 9,000 deaths reported and individuals are still missing. This tragedy is just one of the hundreds of act that mother nature has produced that no one will ever forget.

To prevent death and to make sure you are prepared for you and your family here are some tips that will help protect you and your family for when nature decides to get out of control.

Earthquake

A earthquake is very, very scary there are things falling around you, houses and trees collapsing, it is horrible! When this happens this is what steps to take to prevent losing lives and how to stay safe until help comes.

Take cover near heavy furniture, if you have a wall cabinet duck underneath it if there is space.

Stay away from windows anything that has glass and stay away from kitchen appliances.

Do not try to run stay in a safe place because running could put you in danger of falling objects.

Things to have for earthquake

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your home and a survival kit.

Always have extra flashlights and a battery operated radio. A generator is a great thing to have too.

Store extra water just in case, it is good to always have it you never know especially if you live in a state that is prone to earthquakes such as California.

Most important a first aid kit is very important just in case of injury and a charged cell phone.

How to be prepared for Tornadoes

Tornadoes are very dangerous and it is very easy to be prepared for this type of disaster. Sometimes a tornado doesn’t leave much damage and sometimes it does. Anyways it is very smart to have the essentials needed just in case.

It is always crucial to have somewhere to hide when it takes place. Make sure that you have somewhere that is secure and underground like a basement or a underground cellar.

Have plenty of water available. Never run outside for anything and don’t try to follow it.

If you happen to be in a car when the tornado hits, never try to drive away from it because it can sweep you up and kill you. Drive in a ditch to be safe and stay there.

Store a battery operated radio with extra batteries. Keep a charged cell phone at all times and flashlights.

Have nonperishable items available to avoid starvation such as canned goods, crackers and etc. In addition get a generator.

How to be prepared during a Hurricane

According to Dave Price on CBS news hurricane winds can be 74mph, if major 111mph or over and if more severe 155mph. Hurricane Katrina was hit with winds of 155mph which caused a huge horrific tragedy. Many were killed and thousands lost their homes.

Here are some tips to help you be prepared

If you hear the word hurricane on the news, the best thing to do is to evacuate, get out of town as soon as possible.

Have a generator available, if you happen to be caught in the hurricane.

Always keep extra gasoline

Make sure to have at least a gallon of water per person or more.

Because of the weather machines might malfunction and electricity may be lost. Before it hits go to a ATM and get plenty of cash out in case of this event.

Store canned goods, have food that will not spoil such as peanut butter, crackers and anything else that is nonperishable.

Tip: A great way to keep clean drinkable water during a weather disaster is, fill the tub up with water get a thick piece of plastic cover it up to avoid any debris or bugs from getting into the water.

Blackout how to be ready

Leave at least one light on in the home so that you will know when the lights are back on.

Don’t open the refrigerator to avoid the food from spoiling so quickly.

Never use the oven for heat

Buy candles, flashlights with extra batteries and a battery operated TV so that you can be entertained.

Having a generator as stated in the other tips is always a smart choice.

Flameless candles that are LED made is a safe and smart way to keep light in your home.

Blizzard how to be ready

Stock plenty of food when it comes to a blizzard because you never know how long you will be trapped in your home.

Keep a charged cell phone

When you shovel always go at a steady pace, take breaks in between. If you over work yourself you can cause a heart attack to occur. Shoveling takes a lot of energy, it is a lot of work and a strain on the back. When you shovel use your legs to lift the snow, not your back.

If you are outside stay together, never separate. Just in case someone gets lost in the blizzard, plan a location to meet so that you can easily be found.

These are some very good tips, so please for your safety and others follow them, if you have to print this article and keep it, you never know when natural disaster will strike. These tips are from the TV Show “The Doctors”.

Debris

Debris

$11.98

Michelle Malone has been making hard-edged albums that combine blues, folk, rock, and country music for more than 20 years, but still remains criminally underrated as an artist. With a few exceptions, Debris is a blues-rock outing delivered with her trademark gritty vocals, solid guitar work, and a handpicked band that includes guitarist Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow), keyboard player Tony Reyes (Gwen Stefani), longtime collaborator Phil Skipper on bass, and Dave Anthony (Butch Walker, Ike) on drums. Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen, the Black Crowes, Train) produces with a light hand to keep the sound raw and dirty. “Marked” sounds like a Rolling Stones outtake and likens breaking up to a car crash or drive-by shooting; Malone’s vulnerable vocal underscores the song’s desolate feel. “Feather in a Hurricane” is tougher, with noisy slide guitar complementing Malone’s snarky delivery. “Restraining Order Blues” bounces in on a Bo Diddley beat; Malone recites all the damage she’s done to her ex’s property and possessions with a cynical smirk in her voice and celebrates her acting out, even as she’s cuffed and put into a police car. “Weed and Wine” recalls the happier days of a relationship behind a sadder but wiser beat and a wistful organ that sounds like the whistling of a far off freight train promising rescue and redemption. “Chattahoochee Boogaloo” is a tough bluesy country song about wild girls sneaking out of the bedroom windows on summer nights to explore the mysteries of womanhood, marked by stinging slide guitar and Malone’s crooning vocal. Malone breaks the frame with “14th Street and Mars” an R&B ballad with a ’60s flavor and an outstanding vocal, and “Candle for the Lonely,” a lament delivered with acoustic guitar and subtle melancholy country piano from Reyes. ~ j. poet, Rovi Performers: Jonny Daly – Pedal Steel; Trina Meade – Vocals (Background); Angela Kaset – Keyboards; Dave Anthony – Drums; Harold Sellers – Percussion; Michelle Malone – Harmonica, Vocals, Guitar; Nick DiDia – Keyboards; Peter Stroud – Guitar; Phillip “Philzone” Skipper – Guitar (Bass), Bass;

Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows

Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows

$318

This book contains papers presented at the First International Conference on Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows. The contents stress the importance and possibilities of numerical simulation and experimental measurements on all those environmental flows that affect our environment, sometimes dramatically. The basic concept of dense flow relates to a great variety of natural phenomena that occur both in the field and in the laboratory. A more detailed understanding of these may lead not only to a better description of what happens in nature but also to the definition of more effective countermeasures to limit the worst effects or even to predict the dynamics of natural disasters in order to minimise potential damage. This book contains sections on the following topics: Mass wasting and solid transport; Slope failure and landslides; Sediment, slurry and granular flows; Solid transport within a streamflow; Hyper-concentrated flows; Debris-flow phenomenology and rheology; Debris-flow triggering and mobilisation mechanisms; Debris flow modelling; Debris flow disaster mitigation (structural and non-structural measures); Case studies; Computer models; Rock falling problems and Mechanics of solid-liquid-flows.

Monitoring, Simulation, Prevention and Remediation of Dense and Debris Flows II

$158

This book contains papers presented at Second International Conference on Debris Flow including all aspects of Debris Flow Monitoring, Modelling, Hazard Assessment, Mitigation Measures, Case Studies and Extreme Events, Erosion, Slope Instability and Sediment Transport, held in the New Forest, UK in 2008 and organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, with the co-sponsorship of EurAgEng (European Society of Agricultural Engineers) and CIGR (International Commission of Agricultural Engineering).Due to the increased frequency with which debris and hyper-concentrated flows occur and the impact they have on both the environment and human life, in recent years these extreme events and related processes have attracted increasing attention from research groups, land planning and management professionalsThe objective of the Meeting was to provide a forum for engineers, scientists and managers from laboratories, industry, government and academia to interchange knowledge and expertise in the field of dense and hyper-concentrated flows. A full understanding of these phenomena leads to a new integrated risk management approach which provides measures for preventing a hazard turning into a natural disaster.

The Buffalo Creek Disaster

The Buffalo Creek Disaster

$9.99

One Saturday morning in February 1972, an impoundment dam owned by the Pittston Coal Company burst, sending a 130 million gallon, 25 foot tidal wave of water, sludge, and debris crashing into southern West Virginia’s Buffalo Creek hollow. It was one of the deadliest floods in U.S. history. 125 people were killed instantly, more than 1,000 were injured, and over 4,000 were suddenly homeless. Instead of accepting the small settlements offered by the coal company’s insurance offices, a few hundred of the survivors banded together to sue. This is the story of their triumph over incredible odds and corporate irresponsibility, as told by Gerald M. Stern, who as a young lawyer and took on the case and won. Whenever a trend becomes hot — -be it disco, gangsta rap, emo, rap-metal, teen pop or reggaetón — there will inevitably be saturation. Screamo (also known as post-hardcore or melodic hardcore) was hot in the early to mid-2000s; it wasn’t the mainstream phenomenon that emo was, but in the hardcore underground, it was very hot — and saturation most definitely occurred. One of the results of saturation is a glut of soundalike bands, and there is nothing on In the Disaster that sets Southern California’s A Love Ends Suicide apart from countless other screamo units that emerged in the early 21st century. Some reviewers have described this 2006 release as full-fledged metalcore, which is misleading if one’s idea of full-fledged metalcore is Hatebreed or Throwdown. Although the screamo/post-hardcore/melodic hardcore style is influenced by metalcore, it isn’t metalcore in the strict sense, but rather, combines metalcore elements with melodic elements. In the Disaster is relatively melodic — -that is, it’s melodic compared to the unforgiving, skull-smashing ferocity of true metalcore — -and this 39-minute CD contrasts the bitter with the sweet. Harsh, tortured, screaming vocals (a prime ingredient of metalcore) are heard alongside swirling guitars and clean vocals (not a prime ingredient of metalcore), and In the Disaster is intense without being relentlessly ferocious. Ultimately, A Love Ends Suicide offers more sensory assault than sweetening (whereas some screamo bands provide bigger doses of sweetening), but unlike straight-up metalcore, this album isn’t devoid of mercy. Unfortunately, In the Disaster is a release that, although competent, isn’t terribly memorable. This is not a bad album, but if A Love Ends Suicide hopes to stand out in the ultra-crowded screamo/post-hardcore/melodic hardcore field, they will need to come up with some material that sticks with the listener after the album is finished playing. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi Performers: Amber Estrada – Vocals; Andres Abdo – Drums; Emir Abdo – Keyboards, Bass, Vocals; John Cairoli – Vocals

Disaster

Disaster

$22.39

Like the first two albums, Disaster comes from the same 1968 jam session, which if nothing else shows that the phrase “burst of creativity” can have a very real equivalent. As with the previous two releases, the emphasis is on open-ended, percussion-heavy, choppy-guitared songs with random, often wordless chanting, with rough sound being the general order of the day. Compared to the other two, Disaster has a slightly more “live” feeling, with less evidence of later studio additions or tweaks. It’s a touch calmer as well, though nowhere near as sweet as Para Dieswärts Düül turned out to be. Exactly how planned this release was is up to question — it appeared after the band had broken up, and its two-LP original format speaks of a serious clearing out of the vaults. Regardless, there are some definite winners here; Disaster could even be considered the logical conclusion of the band’s “try anything and see what works” ethic. Opening song “Drum Things (Erschalgzuegtes)” is very much a classic lengthy jam in the style of Psychedelic’s “Ein Wunderhubsches,” with what sound like fingerbells providing a notable percussion element along with the pounding drums, especially at the end. Numerous other longer tracks like “Somnium (Trauma)” (which ends with some great drum work) and “Chaoticolor (Entsext)” make up the bulk of the album’s length, most settling on a key riff and grooving away on it just fine, with slight alterations appearing as each piece progresses. Some of the shorter numbers are as close as the group ever got to catchy pop; one sprightly number, a Beatles semi-revamp barely a minute long before petering out, has the perfect title “Yea Yea Yea (Zerbeatelt).” Unfairly trashed over the years, Disaster is just like the band that made it — wonderful, weird, and wiggy. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Angelika Filanda – Vocals, Percussion; Ella Bauer – Vocals, Percussion; Helge Filanda – Vocals, Percussion; Peter Leopold – Drums; Rainer Bauer – Vocals, Guitar; Ullrich Leopold – Bass; Uschi Obermeier – Percussion; Wolfgang Krischke – Keyboards, Percussion

Debris Flow

Debris Flow

$119.95

This is a comprehensive account to the subject and treats both the theoretical and applied aspects of debris flow. In the first part, the fundamental mechanical aspects are discussed, like flow characteristics, type classification, mechanics, occurrence and development, fully developed flow and deposition processes. The second part sheds light on the application of the theories presented in computer simulated reproductions of some real disasters. Special attention is paid to debris flow controlling structures, design effectiveness and performance, soft countermeasure problems, like the identification of debris flow prone ravines and the prediction of occurrence by means of precipitation threshold. The qualitative and fundamental character of this text allows its use as a textbook in graduate level courses and makes it recommend reading for professionals in engineering, geosciences and water resources who are working on the mechanics and countermeasures of debris flow. The Japanese version of this book was awarded the 'Publishing Culture Prize' by the JapanSociety of Civil Engineers (2004).

Cosmic Debris

Cosmic Debris

$12.79

Issued as a bonus disc with Intergalactic Sonic 7″s, the 2001 compilation of Ash singles released between 1994 and 2001, Cosmic Debris collects the Northern Ireland alternative pop band’s finest B-sides. With over 60 to choose from — reflecting just how prolific the group had been through the years — fans helped weed these flip sides down via an online poll to the ultimate track listing. It’s no big secret that Ash, an already adventurous band compared to everyone from Oasis to Weezer to Supergrass, have long utilized B-sides as an outlet for their more experimental leanings. On this must-have for devotees, Tim Wheeler-penned tracks like “Where Is Our Love Going?” and “No Place to Hide” are as immediate as the band’s material gets, while oddball inclusions like “Astral Conversations With Toulouse Lautrec” and “The Sweetness of Death By the Obsidian Knife” are probably only critically important for devotees. Either way, Cosmic Debris, Rovi

Hello Debris

Hello Debris

$14.38

Hello Debris came out 13 years after Hail’s previous record, 1993’s Kirk. The group is too low-profile for this to be considered a comeback effort. And its members, Susanne Lewis and Bob Drake, are too involved in several other projects for this album to be motivated by money. What’s left then? What can justify reactivating a project after a decade-long hiatus? The songs, that’s what. In the end, Hello Debris is by far Hail’s best record yet: lighter, funnier, and more elaborate than either Turn of the Screw or Kirk. Lewis’ lyrics are marvelously awkward and her melodies catchy. Drake’s arrangements and production are downright mad, perfectly in tune with his own solo albums. The short durations also point toward his solo direction. Indeed, Hello Debris delivers 18 tracks in under 40 minutes. Each piece introduces a stylistic shift, and most of them end on a musical punch line. From rockabilly and surf to doom rock and grunge, Hail use every style they can get a hold of and transmogrify them into Hail Rock. What this album comes down to, though, is art rock, as in rock music lovingly labored over to make it larger than rock. Hello Debris is more experimental than its predecessors, with a heavier serving of Drake’s unique brand of avant-prog, but it remains more song-based and rock & roll than his or Lewis’ other projects; slightly trashier too. Highlights include the lighthearted “Celestial Heartbeat” and the proggier “New Skyline,” but there is not a single throwaway track on the album. ~ François Couture, Rovi Performers: Bob Drake – Banjo, Guitar, Drums, Violin, Bass, Percussion, Guitar (Bass); Susanne Lewis – Vocals, Keyboards, Guitar

Miscellaneous Debris

Miscellaneous Debris

$7.94

What makes this 5-song EP of covers Primus’s best release is the material. For once, Les Claypool’s crew plays actual songs instead of sketching out a few ideas as an excuse for jamming. As a result, Miscellaneous Debris isn’t as weird and alienating as previous albums, and often their reinterpretations — from the clever ribbing of XTC’s “Making Plans for Nigel” and Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar” to the relatively respectful readings of The Meters, the Residents and Peter Gabriel’s “Intruder” — show flashes of brilliance, largely due to the loose yet focused musicianship. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Les Claypool – Kazoo, Bass, Vocals

Design and Debris

Reading eight major contemporary authors through the lens of chaos theory, Conte offers new and original interpretations of works that have been the subject of much critical debate.Design and Debris discusses the relationship between order and disorder in the works of John Hawkes, Harry Mathews, John Barth, Gilbert Sorrentino, Robert Coover, Thomas Pynchon, Kathy Acker, and Don DeLillo. In analyzing their work, Joseph Conte brings to bear a unique approach adapted from scientific thought: chaos theory. His chief concern is illuminating those works whose narrative structures locate order hidden in disorder (whose authors Conte terms "proceduralists"), and those whose structures reflect the opposite, disorder emerging from states of order (whose authors Conte calls "disruptors"). Documenting the paradigm shift from modernism, in which artists attempted to impose order on a disordered world, to postmodernism, in which the artist portrays the process of "orderly disorder," Conte shows how the shift has led to postmodern artists' embrace of science in their treatment of complex ideas. Detailing how chaos theory interpenetrates disciplines as varied as economics, politics, biology, and cognitive science, he suggests a second paradigm shift: from modernist specialization to postmodern pluralism. In such a pluralistic world, the novel is freed from the purely literary and engages in a greater degree of interactivity-between literature and science, and between author and reader. Thus, Conte concludes, contemporary literature is a literature of flux and flexibility.Joseph M. Conte is Associate Professor of English at SUNY-Buffalo and author of Unending Design: The Forms of Postmodern Poetry.
