The Core $10.38 Gollum’s second album is one of those sophomore releases shadowed by tragedy, in this case the death of drummer, lyricist, and founding member Hunter Holland some weeks after he finished recording. Unsurprisingly, the album’s eventual release became a tribute to him, allowing him to literally have the last word with his spoken word performance on “Omens.” Seen as it was originally intended, the band’s four-years-in-the-making follow-up to its self-released debut, it’s a sharp enough piece of work, perhaps most notable for the recorded debut of singer/keyboardist Shawn Corbett, who adds a bit of Darkthrone style shrillness to the group’s crisp, no-frills style. In fact, much of The Core feels almost astringent but in an enjoyable way, thick riffs curving around Holland’s brisk then swinging parts on songs like the title track. Lusher moments turn up as well, such as the attractively moody introduction to “Ominous Winds,” one of a couple of songs with understated female vocals from Cassie Sipe. If Gleichmar doesn’t screw around much with the expected basics — there are the vocal snippets chopped and swirled into infinity, the compressed horn section moments, and plenty of other signifiers that stand for dub without even trying — it’s the squirrelly bits he slips in on a variety of songs that make them the treats they are. “Jah Red Gold and Green” has a title that says it all, but the burbling computer voice sounds like it should be part of Berzerk, while “Blast You to Bits” has a core dialogue exchange lifted straight from the ur-source of all computer-animated action movies, Tron (“Bomb 20″ does the same with Dark Star). It may be largely a one-woman show — Winter’s acoustic guitar and banjo work and her sweetly twangy vocals (and multi-tracked harmonies) form the album’s core, sometimes augmented by slide guitar, piano, drums, and the occasional fiddle or horn section — but there’s a friendly, collective, front-porch vibe throughout. Winter’s songwriting is sweet but not too sticky — her conversational lyrics, on everyday love, life, and death, peppered with pastoral imagery and the occasional good-natured joke, don’t always leave a strong impression, though she fares better on the topical “Dr. Tiller,” a pointed pro-choice ballad documenting the 2009 murder of Wichita abortion provider George Tiller, and the title cut, a two-part fiddle tune/nursery rhyme pairing backyard lovesickness metaphors with gardening tips (and banana slug taunts). But she’s got plenty of gently soaring melodies to make up for it, with the loping, low-key “Dance Gently on My Grave” and the farewell waltz “On to Me” offering two of the most memorable. Hard Core $7.18 Lil’ Kim certainly lives up to her provocative billing on Hard Core. Just a notch or two below other mid-’90s East Coast hardcore rap classics like the Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready to Die and Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, Hard Core emulates much of the gangsta attitude that had characterized the West Coast rap of the time yet retains an East Coast production style that is built upon sampling rather than G-funk. There’s plenty of substance here as well as style, though the Queen Bitch herself gives it to you raw and salaciously like you’d expect, yet also quite wittily and nimbly. It’s her wit and nimbleness that truly set her apart from her peers, as few and far between as they may be. After all, there’s no shortage of porno rap out there, but few of the niche style’s practitioners can earn your respect while still tickling your fancy. Kim is one of those very few, and she showcases her talents throughout Hard Core, beginning with “Big Momma Thang,” her album-opening duet with Jigga. Elsewhere, she flosses with Puff Daddy on “No Time” (“Yeah, I Momma, Miss Ivana/Usually rock the Prada, sometimes Gabbana/Stick you for your cream and your riches/Zsa Zsa Gabor, Demi Moore, Prince Diane, and all them rich bitches”); imposes her gangstressness Biggie-style on “Queen Bitch” (“Hit hard like sledge hammers, bitch with that platinum grammar/I am a diamond-cluster hustler/Queen bitch, supreme bitch/Kill a nigga for my nigga by any means bitch”); and puts all the fellas in their proper place on the empowering “Not Tonight” (“The moral of the story is this/You ain’t lickin’ this, you ain’t stickin’ this/And I got witnesses, ask any nigga I been with/They ain’t hit sh*t till they stuck they tongue in this…I don’t want dick tonight/Eat my pussy right”). The relentless sexuality can be a bit much, even for the most ardent fans of hardcore rap. Hard Core Logo $12.74 Bruce McDonald directed this mock-documentary (and appears onscreen as himself) which looks at a veteran punk rock band taking one final stab at the big time. Singer Joe Dick (Hugh Dillon), guitarist Billy Tallent (Callum Keith Rennie), bassist John Oxenberger (John Pyper-Fergson), and drummer Pipefitter (Bernie Coulson) were the members of Hard Core Logo, a Vancouver-based rock band that was one of Canada’s biggest and most influential punk outfits for the better part of a decade. Formed in 1978, Hard Core Logo broke up in 1991 after releasing seven albums and playing over a thousand shows; Joe went on to play the occasional solo gig, Billy moved to L.A. and has been sitting in with platinum-selling alternative pop band Jennifur while their guitarist tries to kick drugs, John has been putting his life back together after a severe nervous breakdown, and Pipefitter hasn’t been doing much of anything. Word begins to circulate that Bucky Haight (Julian Richings), one of the seminal figures of Canadian punk and Joe’s mentor, lost a leg (or maybe both) following a mysterious incident in which intruders shot him after breaking into his prairie farmhouse. Joe organizes a benefit for Bucky, with Hard Core Logo reuniting for the occasion; the show is a huge success, and Joe persuades Billy to join him, John, and Pipefitter for a five-date reunion tour to cash in on the benefit’s notoriety. Billy, killing time while he waits to find out if his spot in Jennifur will become permanent, is more than a bit preoccupied, and his desire for professionalism doesn’t mesh especially well with Joe’s take-it-as-it-comes attitude — especially after it becomes evident that Joe’s purposes for reuniting the band weren’t as benevolent as they seemed.
