What should a chick drummer wear to gigs?

My band is having its first gig in a couple weeks, and I have no idea what to wear. I am the drummer, 17 years old, and we’re just playing a few covers of some classic rock songs. I am usually just a jeans and t-shirt kinda girl, don’t wear make up often, but would like to dress it up into a more rocker chick look for our shows, nothing too extreme though. So I just need some ideas or links to cute pieces, accessories, outfits, etc.

Just wear a black t shirt and jeans. The rocker chick look is kind of lame. Just a shirt and jeans is a heck of a lot cooler than anything you’ll find at Hot Topic that is ‘rocker chic’.

Total Decay $7.62 Luis Vasquez already seemed pretty comfortable with the dark side of his music on the Soft Moon’s self-titled debut album, but he dives even deeper into it on the Total Decay EP. It may be only four songs long, but Vasquez makes up for its small size by packing even more ominous drones and evil-sounding synths into it. The title track lives up to its name, with alternately writhing and piercing electronic tones that bore through ears like maggots working their way through flesh, while “Repetition” pits death-rattle percussion against feral yelps and squealing synths that sound like they’re being tweaked within an inch of their circuits. All this darkness comes at a price, however: Vasquez largely sacrifices the pop moments that balanced the Soft Moon’s sinister sonic experiments. “Alive” comes the closest to Vasquez’s approach on his debut, but even this track’s whispers and screams are more abstract, and somehow more relentless, than what came before. “Visions”’ alien buzz and piled-on tribal beats end Total Decay on a confident and somewhat claustrophobic note, reaffirming that while the Soft Moon may not always be easy listening, Vasquez knows exactly what he’s doing. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

Total Recall [The Deluxe Edition] $14.38 This Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack release is worth extended attention. The album is pulsingly rhythmic from the start, beginning with syncopation driven by whipcrack percussion and a clock-precise digital synthesizer pulse, on which Goldsmith builds ascending orchestra chords that sneakily reference “Mars” from Holst’s The Planets without utterly aping the piece; this builds to a climax and changes, softening before managing to indicate menace without using the easy escape of minor chords. For once, despite the inevitable digital synthesizers and distinctive electronic percussion, Goldsmith has fashioned a score that’s primarily driven by the orchestra, rather than being primarily dependent on electronic keyboards. To that extent, it’s a rather old-fashioned action/suspense score, building and releasing tension in many varied ways. “The Hologram” uses everything from a clock-like ticking to low-key orchestral discord to massive orchestral stabs designed to propel action along at a stunning rate, after which it’s back to a supposedly calming effect — which, of course, has a subtly unnerving counter-theme running through it. One can easily visualize action coupled to the music — again, that old-fashioned, almost Hitchcockian nervousness where nothing makes any sense and everything is a threat. While themes, as always, reappear at points during the score, the repetition is kept to a minimum, which is also a plus. Also kept to a minimum is Goldsmith’s tendency to insert the odd too-sweet theme (this worked very well with Gremlins 2, and not so well in other places). If anything, this particular score is a stunning display of Goldsmith’s brilliance as a composer — a great deal of it would not be out of place on the concert stage. By turns overwhelmingly dramatic, scary, and gorgeous, Total Recall is by far among Goldsmith’s best, ranking with his score for the European release of Legend. On the audio and mastering side, Goldsmith engineer Bruce Botnick has done an excellent job, providing a clear and transparent stereo master that clearly delineates the separate instrument groups while maintaining an excellent balance of low, middle, and high (the bass is clean and powerful; this is usually the first area to suffer badly in a digital recording). Lejaren Hiller: A Total Matrix of Possibilities $13.58 By rights, one should not traverse any reputable history of electronic music, particularly in respect to computers, without encountering mention of Lejaren Hiller; his ILLIAC Suite (1956) was the first original musical work created with the aid of one. Hiller was also instrumental in developing the first computerized systems used to create musical notation, back in the days of punched paper tape. Collaborations were common in early electronic music as there was so much work to do even to get one note onto a tape; working in teams was more efficient. One such collaboration, HPSCHD with composer John Cage, ultimately became the project Hiller was most readily associated with in many minds. That did more harm than good for Hiller, as HPSCHD, with its dense din of clattering harpsichords and electronic bleeps and bloops, represented to many the avant-garde of the 1960s at its most excessive and overindulgent. As composer and critic, Cornelius Cardew wrote when a performance of HPSCHD was mounted in London, “it will be a king-size electronic multi-media freak-out, and I don’t recommend anyone to go to it.” While Cage more or less abandoned computer-aided composition afterward, Hiller continued in his line of research even though the popularity of synthesizers temporarily marginalized it, but became ill and died long before MIDI and easy-to-use computer notation software reached the desktops of composers worldwide.New World’s A Total Matrix of Possibilities is a labor of love for annotator James Bohn, who has written a book on Hiller and serves as his representative to posterity; the choice of title is a clever one, as the word “matrix” is now widely associated with all things edgy and technological; the phrase comes from Hiller’s own writings. Electronic $7.98 Both more and less than what a partnership of Sumner and Marr would promise, Electronic’s debut has weathered time much better than might have been thought upon its release, but ultimately only half works. When it does, though, it’s fantastic, sometimes shifting from okay to fantastic within the same song. Opening number “Idiot Country” is a bit like that — the beginning sounds a little too rushed, Marr’s heavy wah-wah riff OK enough but Sumner’s semi-rap/semi-sung vocals a bit ham-handed. By the time the full combination of gentle keyboards, crisp rhythms, and the gentle, reflective chorus comes to bear, though, everything feels just great. Perhaps understandably Electronic leans much more toward New Order than the Smiths — Marr had already proven his desire to work in dance-crossover since his previous band’s breakup, while Sumner’s immediately recognizable, melancholic vocals call to mind New Order’s rich history. With synth bass and Rolands standing in for Peter Hook’s own unique way around the low end, though, Electronic stands out more on its own. Marr’s guitar work throughout tends towards the subtle via soft, brisk strums or the occasional repeated key riff; as he’s credited for keyboards as well, it’s likely much of his work ended up creating the pleasant synth melodies. There’s nothing bad per se on Electronic, merely mediocre or a touch forced time to time — “Gangster,” for instance, has a great, cinematic tension undercut by Sumner’s attempt at social relevance. Johnny (Robert Sean Leonard) is a 30-year-old filmmaker who is enjoying a recent run of success and has returned to his old hometown of Lansing, MI, to show his latest project at a film festival. While in town, Johnny pays a visit to Vince (Ethan Hawke), an old friend from high school who is staying in a nearby hotel. Vince has never had a knack for responsibility and these days scrapes together a living as a low-level drug dealer. Johnny and Vince discuss their lives, with Johnny more than a bit judgmental about Vince’s current situation, when the conversation turns to Amy (Uma Thurman), a girl who was Vince’s girlfriend through much of high school and who Johnny dated for a brief spell afterward. Johnny confesses that he hasn’t thought about Amy in ages, but Vince informs him that she’s living nearby, then begins firing a series of increasingly pointed questions at him about his relationship with Amy, concluding with the shocking accusation that Johnny once raped Amy at a party. Like Waking Life, Tape was entirely shot using digital video equipment, and director Linklater remained true to the story’s origins as a stage play, using only three actors and one set for the entire film.
