Masonry Concrete
How can I remove masonry nails from my concrete wall?
I am removing wall paneling and behind it is a bunch of masonry nails with a very small head. Since they are in my concrete wall and have a small head, I cannot just use regular methods to remove them. How can I remove them so I can still waterproof paint my concrete walls?
These nails are very hard. Sawzalls and hacksaws will probably show you very little relief. Breaking them off will probably prove to be the best and fastest method. Smack them with a hammer as if you were going to bend them over. You may have to do this in two directions. Take care in doing this around any windows or doors as the broken nail may break glass. Also make sure you use Eye protection. The flight path of these small missiles can be very unpredictable. GOOD LUCK!!!

Hard Hats in the Workplace
Safety in the workplace means not just having the right kind of equipment but also making sure that the equipment is at its optimum level. There are dozens of protective equipments in construction. A lot of them are issued for individual use to ensure safety. Among these utilities are protective goggles, ear plugs, heavy duty boots, and the ever important hard hat.
If you go to a construction site, you will see the workers wearing mostly yellow hard hats. As a matter of fact, this hat has become the symbol of engineering and construction. This only shows its importance in the construction industry. Have you ever wondered what this hat really does? Is it really true that it gives ample protection for the person wearing it?
Hard hats are well known for durability. They do not wear down that easily. However, do these hats really protect the heads of the construction workers?
There are many misconceptions among workers that wearing hard hats does not make a lot of difference in the workplace because there are still many accidents happening even with it on. However, it has become a standard in the industry for the workers to have hard hats, because it really does lend additional protection from falling debris, if the small ones.
One of the guidelines imposed in a construction site is to wear a hard hat. It is also important that the workers check the manufacturing date of their hats, because although it is very durable, the hat tend to be more crisp and weak as years go by. The hat has to be replaced every five years no matter how the hat looks like. It is the responsibility of the worker to check with the supervisors whether the hat is still within the expiration period.
If you look inside the hat, you will see a suspension that fits the head of the person wearing it. The material used for this is softer and easier to break than the outer shell, that’s why it has to be replaced more often. Most hard hat manufacturers provide extra suspensions, or they are replaced a year before the expiration period.
It is also recommended to clean the hat regularly, which helps in recognizing cracks and damages on the hat. The shells should be routinely checked for cracks, dents, gouges and any impact damage which include abrasions, penetration or signs of tear that could reduce the degree of protection provided by the hat when it was first used. You should replace the hat right away if you see such damage to the hat.
Most manufacturers of hard hats cover or coat the outer shell with a protective layer to resist the rigors of weather. However, if used in extreme conditions, the hat’s expiration speeds up. This is mostly the case when used in workplaces with high temperatures and hazardous chemicals. Typically, the life span of the hat is shortened by 2 years when put under these conditions.
Hard hats are vital for the safety of a worker in a construction site. However, it is also important to remember that the hat alone could not provide sufficient protection in the workplace. The worker must be extra careful and should keep himself safe all the time.

Hats Off to the Bull $11.02 Chevelle have always been an interesting product of the post-grunge era. Imagine if Tool had a clean-cut younger brother who, while bearing a strong family resemblance, went off and played ball for a state college instead of going off to art school before eventually getting lost at Burning Man. What’s made Chevelle such a surprise is that, rather than wither in the shadows of an influence that was also one of their contemporaries, they’ve managed to take their sound in their own direction and fully refine it on their sixth studio album, Hats Off to the Bull. Heavy and dramatic, the album is packed full of tightly coiled, muscular riffs, giving the album a controlled feeling more like a slow burn than an explosive, cathartic release. Chevelle always seem to be in control of the songs, which makes the album feel intense in a way that has an austere, stiff-upper-lip quality. This makes the big releases of pressure, like the title track “Hats Off to the Bull,” feel more earned than if Chevelle had just jammed every song full of breakdowns. White Hats $12.78 For an artist assigned to the electronica genre, Niobe employs a lot of acoustic instruments on her fourth album, White Hats. The primary one is the acoustic guitar, which gives some of the music on the disc a folky feel. Niobe does set some of her songs to beats presumably generated electronically, but this is not a dance record. It is dominated by her languorous vocals, which are rendered in a voice with the same timbre and general style as Joni Mitchell and Rickie Lee Jones. She even begins “The Hills” a cappella, which would seem to defy the electronica tag completely. But she justifies it by the ambivalent character of the music. Nominally, the record should be accessible; it’s certainly easy on the ears. But it is also extremely elusive, in part because the recording and mixing of the vocals emphasize the sound of the voice within the other instruments rather than bringing it out front. Even when Niobe is singing in a relatively unfiltered way, however, it’s nearly impossible to figure out what the lyrics are. She is singing in English, not German, but her Germanic phrasing and emphasis, along with the way she shapes her melodies, render her words virtually incomprehensible. This is not, no doubt, accidental. Although it dabbles in various musical styles, White Hats earns its categorization as electronica because it is primarily concerned with soundscapes that happen to feature instruments and voices rather than with anything as mundane as songs with lyrics that can be understood. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi |
