Bingo Games – 75 Ball, 80 Ball and 90 Ball
Many North American bingo enthusiasts will be shocked to learn that there are three variations on their favourite game. Over in Europe they play 90 ball bingo, and the cards look very different from the traditional 75-ball game that is played in the US and Canada. UK bingo players have been playing 90 ball bingo since the game’s inception. So what you might ask? Well, the 80 and 90 ball bingo cards are arranged differently to the 75 ball cards and can catch you off guard when you play bingo online if you’re not prepared.
We’ll start by talking about the traditional North American game, 75 ball bingo. The cards for a 75 ball game are five rows by five columns, and the columns are typically headed by the letters B – I – N – G – O. The numbers on the card are arranged by column in groups of fifteen, for example numbers under the B will range from 1 to 15, and on each card five unique numbers from that group will appear in the corresponding column. The bingo balls usually have both the letter and number and the familiar call “under the B, thirteen” can be heard in bingo halls across North America.
Two European games gained popularity in the UK and are slowly making their way across the pond to North America. The 80 and 90 ball variations of bingo are both played in the UK, although 90 ball is much more prevalent than its younger counterpart. The 90 ball bingo game is most different from the North American game in that it’s played on a rectangular card. With 3 rows and 9 columns, but only 5 numbers per row, the 90 ball card can be a strange animal when you first take a look at it. The numbers are again arranged by column, with numbers 1 to 9 appearing in the first column on the left.
The 80 ball bingo game is similar to the traditional 75 ball North American game in that it is played on a square card. Instead of a 5 by 5 square however, it is played on a 4 by 4 square. Each column can contain any of twenty numbers, 1 to 20 in the first column, 21 to 40 in the second and so on.
Each variation of bingo has a different style of game that can be played on its cards. Traditionally, 90 ball bingo will be played in three segments, one line, two lines and full card (three lines). These are the simplest types of games. In 75 and 80 ball bingos, single lines are valid, but longer games such as squares, X-shapes, T-shapes and H-shapes are also common. Typically larger shapes mean bigger prizes, and bingo jackpots for full cards can appear when you reach a full card before a certain number of balls have been drawn.
All three games are gaining popularity in the online bingo world, and most bingo sites offer two types of games. The UK-centric sites will offer more 90 ball games and the sites catering to US players will offer more 75 and 80 ball games.

All American 921 21-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner $199.00 This heavy-duty pressure cooker’s large capacity is probably best utilized for canning (though it would also be great for a number of cooking tasks). Wrecking Ball $8.78 Dead Confederate mine a mix of haunting Southern rock and angst-driven grunge on Wrecking Ball, the band’s debut album. At its best, Wrecking Ball mires itself in a swamp of spacy guitars and raw vocals, evoking the deep-space atmospherics of Pink Floyd while remaining rooted in the American South. At its worst, the album dives into the same heavy sludge that dominated Silverchair’s early work, especially on tracks like “Heavy Petting.” Wrecking Ball is a dark, angry affair filled with minor chords and fuzzy guitar riffs; its biggest asset, then, is the band’s contrasting love for vintage stoner rock. When grunge and psychedelia combine, Dead Confederate turns out the album’s most effective songs, from “Flesh Colored Canvas” (at a whopping 12 minutes, the tune’s hypnotic grit almost erases the sourness of its title) to “The Rat,” where frontman Hardy Morris wearily begs an ex-lover to shoot him. Fortunately, Dead Confederate bills itself as a psychedelic rock band, which means this reliance on sludgy grunge may decrease on future albums. As a debut album, however, Wrecking Ball only hints at the band’s potential. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rovi |

Air Ball $30 John R. Gerdy has seen nearly every side of athletics. He is the son of a high school football coach; he was an All-American and professional basketball player and a legislative assistant for the National Collegiate Athletic Association; and he served as an associate commissioner for the Southeastern Conference. In Air Ball: American Education's Failed Experiment with Elite Athletics, Gerdy brings all of those perspectives to argue that the American system of school and community athletics is broken. But he is no mere naysayer. He offers a bold, progressive blueprint for reforming athletics to meet our country's educational and public health needs. Given higher education's historic role of providing leadership in our society, the initiative to restore a more sensible balance between athletics and education must begin with the reform of big-time college athletics. Despite widespread public skepticism regarding higher education's ability to change the system, Gerdy argues that the opportunity for reform has never been better. Using a provocative mix of research and thoughtful observation, he argues that, for the first time in the history of American higher education, the critical mass of people, organizations, and outside pressures necessary to drive and sustain progressive, systemic reform of the college athletic enterprise are in place. |

Advancing the Ball $24.95 Two days before Super Bowl XLI in 2007, the game's two opposing head coaches posed with the trophy one of them would hoist after the contest. It was a fairly unremarkable event, except that both coaches were African American–a fact that was as much of a story as the game itself. As Jeremi Duru reveals in Advancing the Ball, this unique milestone resulted from the work of a determined group of people whose struggles to expand head coaching opportunities for African Americans ultimately changed the National Football League. Since the league's desegregation in 1946, opportunities had grown plentiful for African Americans as players but not as head coaches–the byproduct of the NFL's old-boy network and lingering stereotypes of blacks' intellectual inferiority. Although Major League Baseball and the NBA had, over the years, made progress in this regard, the NFL's head coaches were almost exclusively white up until the mid-1990s. Advancing the Ball chronicles the campaign of former Cleveland Browns offensive lineman John Wooten to right this wrong and undo decades of discriminatory head coach hiring practices–an initiative that finally bore fruit when he joined forces with attorneys Cyrus Mehri and Johnnie Cochran. Together with a few allies, the triumvirate galvanized the NFL's African American assistant coaches to stand together for equal opportunity and convinced the league to enact the "Rooney Rule," which stipulates that every team must interview at least one minority candidate when searching for a new head coach. In doing so, they spurred a movement that would substantially impact the NFL and, potentially, the nation. Featuring an impassioned foreword by Coach Tony Dungy, Advancing the Ball offers an eye-opening, first-hand look at how a few committed individuals initiated a sea change in America's most popular sport and added an extraordinary new chapter to the civil rights story. |

The Ball is Round $18.99 The definitive book about soccer. With a new foreword for the American edition. There may be no cultural practice more global than soccer. Rites of birth and marriage are infinitely diverse, but the rules of soccer are universal. No world religion can match its geographical scope. The single greatest simultaneous human collective experience is the World Cup final. In this extraordinary tour de force, David Goldblatt tells the full story of soccer’s rise from chaotic folk ritual to the world’s most popular sport-now poised to fully establish itself in the USA. Already celebrated internationally, The Ball Is Round illuminates soccer’s role in the political and social histories of modern societies, but never loses sight of the beauty, joy, and excitement of the game itself. |

Dropping the Ball $10.99 HALL OF FAMER DAVE WINFIELD: “THE GAME I LOVE IS HURTING.” Revenue has never been higher, attendance has never been better, and baseball has never had a stronger international presence. Yet, with all of the prosperity, the game has rarely faced more significant problems, both in the headlines and deep within our communities. Steroid scandals, labor strife, self-centered superstars, a dramatic decline in the number of African American players and fans, constraints on Little League facilities and resources, and competition from trendier sports and entertainment options all threaten the foundations of our national pastime. Dave Winfield knows and loves the game and he believes baseball can be rescued and revitalized. In Dropping the Ball, Dave presents his compelling plan of action for saving this great game from self-destruction. A respected role model and ambassador of the sport, Winfield outlines his strategy for making baseball the game he knows it can be: inclusive, empowering, and entertaining. He focuses on how to make the game more fan-friendly, and especially how to reach out to the African American community. From the commissioner’s office to the kids on the street, Winfield examines the game from every perspective, offering ideas and solutions for diversifying front offices; marketing the game; developing community-based programs; and working out fair, creative, and lucrative parameters for the business of baseball. Dropping the Ball inspires readers to get out of the armchair and into the action. Urbane and entertaining, this is a trenchant, thought-provoking, and uplifting analysis of what can be done — by the baseball giants and by all who play and love the game — to save America’s national pastime for you, your kids, and your community. |

Gonna Ball $37.59 The Stray Cats’ second album, Gonna Ball, was considered something of a disappointment when it was released in 1981; back then, it had the disadvantage of competing with the expectations raised by its immediate predecessor, a miraculous debut produced under the guidance of Dave Edmunds. When they pulled up stakes in England and returned to the U.S.A., they signed with EMI-America and built their American debut around what the band considered the best songs off of their first two records — as a result, neither U.K. album was widely heard intact on American shores. Heard on its own terms 23 years later, Gonna Ball seems like a minor masterpiece, capturing the group going deep into early rock & roll and even pre-rock & roll roots music and far beyond the boundaries of rockabilly, supported by various players, including Rolling Stones alumnus Ian Stewart. Their rendition of Johnny Burnette’s “Baby Blue Eyes” was a bracing opener (later moved to the closing spot on their third album). Brian Setzer’s “Cryin’ Shame” included a killer extended jam and harmonica showcase, and the Lee Rocker/Slim Jim Phantom-authored “(She’ll Stay Just) One More Day” was a sophisticated piece of jump blues with a beautiful sax solo at its center and powerful central riff; Setzer’s “What’s Goin’ Down (Cross That Bridge),” in turn, was as fine a Bo Diddley tribute as had been done by any white artist since the 1960s — and none of those three made it on to their American debut LP. Setzer’s “You Don’t Believe Me” oozed the spirit of Elmore James out of every guitar note, while “Gonna Ball” and “Wicked Whisky” were exercises in rockabilly primitivism. “Rev It Up and Go” — which made it to the third album — was an impassioned Chuck Berry homage that also obliquely acknowledged the Beach Boys’ service in making his riffs work in a uniquely white suburban context. “Lonely Summer Nights” — also on the third album — proved that this band could handle the ballad side of ’50s music with the best of them when they wanted to. And “Crazy Mixed Up Kids” (which didn’t make the cut to album number three) was a psychobilly instrumental workout par excellence. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi Performers: Brian McDonald – Harmonica; Slim Jim Phantom – Cymbals, Drums; Brian Setzer – Guitar, Vocals; Ian Stewart – Keyboards; John Locke – Keyboards; Lee Allen – Sax (Tenor); Lee Rocker – Bass Fiddle, Bass, Vocals; |
