The Open Road $20.78 Indiana-born John Hiatt is an unlikely but enthusiastic champion of the Midwestern work ethic — he’s been making records since 1974, but 2010’s The Open Road is his sixth studio effort since the dawn of the new millennium, and it sounds like the work of a man who isn’t about to stop doing this work anytime soon. Like 2008’s Same Old Man, The Open Road was recorded at Hiatt’s home studio, and while he and his road band (Doug Lancio on guitar, Patrick O’Hearn on bass, and Kenny Blevins on drums) conjure up a lean, soulful groove on these sessions, the mood is easygoing and almost casual, which easily suits the bluesy tone of these songs. Time keeps adding a little more grit to Hiatt’s voice with each passing year, and he’s smart enough to use it in his favor, with the sandy texture of his instrument adding weight and gravity to tunes like “Like a Freight Train” (in which he’s bad enough to steal his mom’s morphine), “Haulin’” (a road tune that plays like a Dixie-fried Chuck Berry variant), and “What Kind of Man” (another tale of a morally dubious character with shady habits), though the vocals are also a bit lower in the mix than usual this time out. Hiatt’s voice and sneaky but literate lyrical style are also a fine match for Lancio’s guitar work, full of sliding figures and well-punctuated string bends, and the steady, rock-solid roll of the rhythm section pushes the songs along without forcing them to move faster or harder then they want. And as a songwriter, Hiatt remains one of the best craftsmen in his field; if he doesn’t sound inspired as often as he once did on albums like Bring the Family and Slow Turning, the tunes remain slinky and evocative and his stories of men either succumbing to or trying to overcome their lesser instincts still bear the ring of truth and never sound rote. John Hiatt’s muse hasn’t stopped keeping him on task, and the work he’s doing remains satisfying, and anyone who can crank out an album as good as The Open Road every 18 months or so would be well advised to keep up the good work. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Abbey Road $12.78 The last Beatles album to be recorded (although Let It Be was the last to be released), Abbey Road was a fitting swan song for the group, echoing some of the faux-conceptual forms of Sgt. Pepper’s, but featuring stronger compositions and more rock-oriented ensemble work. The group was still pushing forward in all facets of its art, whether devising some of the greatest harmonies to be heard on any rock record (especially on “Because”), constructing a medley of songs/vignettes that covered much of side two, adding subtle touches of Moog synthesizer, or crafting furious guitar-heavy rock (“The End,” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” “Come Together”). George Harrison also blossomed into a major songwriter, contributing the buoyant “Here Comes the Sun” and the supremely melodic ballad “Something,” the latter of which became the first Harrison-penned Beatles hit. Whether Abbey Road is the Beatles’ best work is debatable, but it’s certainly the most immaculately produced (with the possible exception of Sgt. The Living Road $11.02 Everyone knows that when you release your debut album, consisting of an assortment of sophisticated and worldly numbers performed in Spanish, and that album goes on to make a far bigger splash worldwide than anyone expected, the only sensible course of action is to…run away and join the circus? That’s precisely what Lhasa de Sela did following the success of La Llorona: she joined with other members of her family, which always had a nomadic streak in it, and toured around Europe as part of a circus. Upon her return, she got to work on The Living Road, an album about travel, whether it be wheels upon the road, or through life itself. It’s hard to say whether the experience of life on the road was the catalyst for the broadening of the writing this time out; there are songs in Spanish, French, and English this time out, but all three are languages that Lhasa was immersed in beforehand. Musically, it’s a natural follow-up to La Llorona, drawing from many of the same traditional styles and blending them with more modern instrumentation into a very seamless, sophisticated, and sensual mélange, one that thankfully never tips over into the pretentious, condescending, or hokey. And then, of course, there’s the real star of the show: Lhasa’s voice, which is never short of gorgeous throughout. Summertown Road $14.38 In an era when the term “bluegrass” is too often applied to pretty much anything with a fiddle and a mandolin, it’s heartening to know that not only are there still some trad-bluegrass vets out there keeping the classic bluegrass sound alive, but there are new groups coming together to make sure the old-school style of bluegrass keeps on going in years to come. The debut album of Summertown Road shows the quartet to be very much in the latter camp. Most of the band hails from Kentucky — ground zero for the high, lonesome sound — and the members have some pretty impressive pedigrees, which include work with everyone from Ralph Stanley to Bill Monroe and Jim & Jesse. The sound they create on their first outing is steeped in the world of the Monroe Brothers, the Stanley Brothers, et al, but most importantly, Summertown Road is full of distinctive stylists. In a genre where you stand or fall by how well you swing your axe, they’re solidly ahead of the game. Banjo man Jack Hicks in particular turns out to have one of the most original styles to appear in the trad-bluegrass scene in some time — visceral and full of surprises as well as technically impressive. True to their Kentucky roots, the harmonies of guitarist Bo Isaac and fiddler/mandolinist Jonathan Rigsby ring out pure and clear. Most of the tunes here are originals penned by the band, and they mesh perfectly with Summertown Road’s tradition-minded sound, the only misstep being “Two Medals,” which ventures too far toward a folkie, newgrass ballad style. Rounding things out with songs learned from the likes of Tom T. Hall and Bobby Osborne, this promising debut offers hope to those who fear for the continuing good health of bluegrass in the 21st century. ~ J. The LED lamps will remain off until one cell reaches a voltage of 3.7 volts. Then balancing will begin. By the time the charge is complete the pack should be balanced. If the cells blink at random the pack is closely balanced. If a few LED’s remain on all the time these cells have a higher voltage then the other cells and more balancing is needed. When the charge is almost complete all the LED’s will turn on. Balancing After Charging Connect the Balancer to the pack. The balancer will begin discharging every cell that has more than 4.15 volts. When all cells are 4.15 volts or less then the balancer will begin balancing to the lowest cell. When all Led’s turn off or occasionally blink at random, then the pack is balanced |
