Skid Steer Loader Basics
The Skid Loader is a rigid frame, engine powered machine with lift arms that are used to attach a wide variety of labor saving tools or attachments. Skid loaders are normally four wheel drive with left side drive wheels that are independent of right side drive wheels. With each side being independent to the other, the wheel speed and direction of rotation of the wheels will determine which direction the loader turns.
Skid loaders are capable of turning in their own tracks, which makes them very maneuverable and valuable for jobs that require the use of compact, agile loader.
Unlike conventional front loaders, the lift arms lay beside the driver with the major pivot points located behind the shoulders of the operator. Due to the operator being in close proximity to moving booms and buckets, earlier models of skid loaders weren’t as safe as conventional front loaders, particularly during entering and exiting.
Skid loaders today have fully enclosed cabs and other safety features that will protect the operator from injury. Just like other front loaders, the skid steer can scrape material from one location to another, carry material in a bucket, or load material on a truck or a trailer.
Operation
A skid loader can sometimes take the place of a large excavator by digging a hole out from the inside. The skid loader will first dig a ramp that leads to the edge of the hole. Then, the loader will use the ramp to carry material out of the hole.
The skid loader will then reshape the ramp by making it steeper and longer as the excavation gets deeper. This method is very useful for digging under an overhead structure where the overhead clearance doesn’t allow for the boom of a large excavator, such as those situations where you are digging a basement under a house.
The bucket of most types of skid loaders can be replaced with several specialized buckets or attachments, many of which are powered by the hydraulic system of the loader.
History
The first 3 wheeled front end loader was invented by two brothers, Cyril and Louis Keller in their machinist shop in Minnesota back in 1957. The Kellers built the loader to help a nearby farmer clean turkey manure from his two story barn. The light and compact loader, with the rear caster wheel, was able to turn around within the length of itself, while performing the very same tasks as conventional front end loaders.
Down the road, the Melroe manufacturing company in Gwinner, North Dakota, purchased the rights to the Keller loader in 1958 and hired the brothers to continue their loader invention. Resulting from the partnership, the M-200 self propelled loader was introduced at the end of 1958.
The loader featured two independent front drive wheels and a rear caster wheel, a 12.9 engine and a 750 lb lift capacity. Two years later, they ended up replacing the caster wheel with a rear axle and introduced the M-400 loader, which was the first four wheel skid steer loader in the world.
In 1962, the Bobcat name was added to describe the key features of the machine – touch, agile, and quick. The M-440 was powered by a 15.5 HP engine and offered a 1100 lb rated operating capacity. In the mid 1960s, the skid steer loader progressed with the introduction of the M600 loader.
Years later, the Bobcat skid steer loader experienced quite a few changes, including the development of a hydrostatic drive system, enforced cab structures, radius and vertical lift arm configurations, deluxe instrumentation, and even heating and air conditioning.
In addition to the rubber tire skid loaders of today, there are now all-wheel steer loaders and even compact track loaders. Compact track loads offer less ground disturbance and feature better traction and control in soft, muddy, wet, and even sandy ground conditions.

Skid $9.99 Blissfully unaware that Atlantica Flight 1945 from Atlanta to Amsterdam is about to make aviation history, First Officer Danny McSweeney focuses his energies on navigating the turbulent personalities of an eccentric female captain, a co-pilot with a talent for tactless comments and conspiracy theories, and a lead flight attendant with an outsized attitude that definitely exceeds the limits for carry-on baggage. On the other side of the cockpit door, the unscheduled in-flight entertainment includes a potbellied pig, a jittery diamond courier, and the recently jilted Lucy Meredith, whose personal mantra of “What Would Oprah Do?” will be challenged by the sudden appearance of her ex and his new traveling partner. On her left sits Hank Hazard, whose unusually polite but constant requests–prompted by his covert role as a spy for the airline–test the limits of the crew’s customer service. But as Lucy and the rest of the crew discover, Hank’s odd behavior is linked to a quiet faith that may play a key role in the fate of everyone on board. Especially when an unexpected traveler sets this already bumpy flight on a course toward the unfriendly skies. From the Trade Paperback edition. |

How do I cut a 4 inch pipe ?? I dont want to use a hacksaw…I need to use a circular pipe cutter,it makes a?
Real clean cut…I cant find a circular pipe cutter that will cut 4 inches …Any suggestions ??
Use an abrasive Chop Saw. If you just have to make one cut, check and see if there is a welding and fabrication shop in your area that will cut it for you.

House Signs Materials a Simple Guide to Granite the Miracle Stone
The use of granite for house signs and kitchen tops is becoming more popular, but do you really know what granite is?
Granite is quite simply a type of very hard rock or stone, it is dug from the ground or blasted or cut from the side of mountains. This is called quarrying. The aim of the quarry is to produce large rectangular blocks. Some of these blocks can be huge and weigh up to twenty tons! Try to imagine a block of stone 6 feet by 6 feet by 12 feet made of one of the hardest and most dense materials in nature.
Now let’s be clear. This is the same stone or rock as is found in our rivers and on many of our beaches all around our coast, especially in Scotland, Cornwall and Devon. Those rocks have been broken and shaped by millions of years of glacial activity but many of them are granite just the same as our blocks.
The blocks are now sawn into sheets of a useful size. These saws are massive beam saws with rows of parallel diamond tipped blades that move backwards and forwards lubricated by water. The blades slice the granite block rather like a bread slicer cutting up a sliced loaf! Sounds simple doesn’t it but granite is incredibly hard. The saws are deafeningly noisy and the process for each block takes days.
Up to this stage the whole business is an act of faith, remember no-one has ever seen this piece of million year old granite. If the stone is seriously flawed or not an acceptable colour all of the work so far is wasted. This will be the first opportunity to see the colour and markings of the stone.
The newly cut slabs are called scants. They have a rough and pitted face covered in saw marks. It is difficult to even see the real colour but by throwing water over the face, the colour and markings become visible and it is possible to see the potential of the scant.
The scants now go for polishing and they are laid flat on polishing machines. These machines used to be called Jenny Linds. They are rotary polishers with large spinning heads that can be changed with different grades of diamond abrasives.
I’m not sure if the modern giant computer controlled versions have such a quaint name but apart from the name, the computers and the size, the principle is the same.
Starting with a coarse grade to grind out the worst marks and grooves the polishing head moves backwards and forwards over the face of the granite in a controlled and even pattern for hour after hour. As each new grade is applied the colour and nature of the granite becomes more apparent, until with the final superfine grades the granite takes on its brilliant polish. The amazing patterns and colours are now seen in their full glory.
Just how hard is granite? Granites are almost impossible to scratch deeply with anything other than high grade steel, tungsten or diamond. Granites are extremely resistant to staining, one of the few things I have found will stain some granites is beetroot juice! Though it has to be left for some time to do any real harm. Lighter coloured granites may stain with rust from dripping guttering etc., so be careful when siting house signs. Granites are extraordinarily resistant to the effects of rain and sun and most corrosives found around the home have little effect.
I have been a Stone mason for forty years, but I never cease to wonder at this miracle of nature. I often wonder who was the first man to try to polish a piece of this super hard stone, whoever he was he was a genius!

Stone by Stone $11.18 Although there are some albums that you can get a feel for instantly, there are others that one never truly gets a handle on. Such is the case with Floater and this recording. A song such as “An Apology” sounds as if it was pick-pocketed from a group like Incubus and Live, a guitar-driven tune that still has a flair for the theatrical at times. After a bit of meandering, it then heaves itself headlong into a lean, meaty, hard rock tune in the vein of Nickelback or Audioslave. This same tone is taken to greater heights with the raunchy “Proviso” that brings to mind a tamer Rage Against the Machine. From there, the group weave an ambient keyboard into a slow, plodding arrangement during “Ghost in the Making” that sways along effortlessly. Floater can’t be pigeonholed easily, especially when they change gears yet again for a mid-tempo, safe but somewhat stale “In America” that is salvaged only by lead singer’s Robert Wynia’s passionate delivery. Fortunately, they redeem themselves with the finely tuned and Police-like “Weightless” that they downplay for some fantastic results. The rhythm section of drummer Pete Cornett and Wynia shines here. Just as solid is the ensuing “Breakdown” that has some U2 hues to it despite the rather lame chorus section that is quite disappointing. Just as ordinary is “Spaces in Between Us” that doesn’t have much going for it. Things improve with “Everything Falls Our Way” which again touches on a radio-friendly hard rock blueprint for its success. Fortunately, Stone by Stone closes on a high note, with the bombastic “Home in the Sky” that is a slow, beefy homage to classic British heavy metal. ~ Jason MacNeil, Rovi Performers: David Amador – Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); Peter Cornett – Electronics, Drums, Percussion; Robert Wynia – Sampling, Bass, Keyboards, Vocals; Sergey – Vocals; The Fiftieth Street Choir – Vocals |

Stone Garden $11.98 Stone Garden hailed from a state one could assume was among the last touched by the chemical stimulant-inspired revolution in rock music in the ’60s. But you wouldn’t be able to tell that from Stone Garden. Cobbled together from live and studio recordings made between 1969 and 1971, the reissue collects virtually every available note by the pack of Idaho teens, including both sides of their lone, extremely rare 45 (“Oceans Inside Me”/”Stop My Thinking”). Aside from that single, all the tracks remained unreleased until appearing as a superbly packaged 1998 Rockadelic LP, reproduced in its entirety on this Gear Fab CD. So is it worth all the archival fuss? Mostly, yes, it really is. Stone Garden is an always blistering and often thrilling racket that splits the difference between the plundering depths of hard rock and the mind-excursion highs of psychedelia (or, more precisely, acid rock), carving out a nifty Western patch of its own. A heady trick for a group of boys from the potato state in the year of Woodstock, and, if dated in minor ways, still body-rattling music decades after the fact. There is some dense riffage (the re-recorded version of “Oceans,” “It’s a Beautiful Day,” an awesome “Woodstick”) that comes as close to proto-heavy metal shredding as anything else recorded in or around 1969 (that includes Steppenwolf, Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, and Blue Cheer), and the band had both an affinity and knack for scintillating, dual-guitar electric blues (“Stop My Thinking”), although the album’s sole outright misstep, “SF Policeman Blues,” apes early Grateful Dead a little too closely. But there is plenty of consciousness-expanding, detail-intriguing, and ominous melodic shifts, nifty but queasy coats of echo, Zappa-esque avant-garde effects (“Bastard”), and surprisingly mature and hip lyrics — even if the performances are not exactly nuanced. Subtle Stone Garden was not. But the music can cut you off at the knees and knock the wind out of you, which is pretty impressive stuff. ~ Stanton Swihart, Rovi |

Towers of Stone $19.95 In Towers of Stone, award-winning Polish reporter Wojciech Jagielski brings into focus the tragedy of Chechnya, its inhabitants, and the war being waged there by a handful of desperate warriors against a powerful and much more numerous army. Jagielski’s narrative is told through the lens of two men: Shamil Basaev, a hero to some, a dangerous warlord to others; and Aslan Maskhadov, a calculating and sober politician, who is viewed as a providential savior by some of his compatriots and a cowardly opportunist by the rest. Caught up in a war to which they owe everything and without which they could not live, the two fighters face enemy forces—and one another—in protean conflicts that prove hard to quell. Viewing the two men’s personal story as a microcosm of the conflict threatening to devour a land and its peoples, Jagielski distills the bitter history of the region with forceful clarity. |

Stone Sour $11.87 While Stone Sour formed as an avenue from which Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor and guitarist Jim Root could unleash their vision without upsetting the legions of Slipknot followers, it is in fact a much more impressive statement than many bands of its ilk. Those who heard “Wait and Bleed” during its radio days should be well aware that Taylor has the ability to actually sing, and on this release he does, bringing forth noticeable influences from Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. Surprisingly, Taylor is quite adept at this vocal platform, and sings with conviction, while Root plays guitar as only he can, with determined intensity. While the lyrical content shares a myriad of similarities with Slipknot, Taylor comes across as much less infuriated and this allows the songs themselves to settle smoothly, yet motivate the listener to feel the emotion being squeezed out. Many should be familiar with “Bother,” which first was found on the Spider-Man soundtrack in the spring of 2002, but the songs that stand out the most are tracks like “Orchids” and “Take a Number,” which strike with surprising force for an alternative rock group. The most remarkable aspect of Stone Sour’s self-titled debut is how the album grows on the listener with repeat plays. Where most hard rock albums wane after too many listens, Stone Sour instead gains strength, making this an excellent album and a much more accomplished effort than Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison’s Murderdolls plaything. ~ Jason D. Taylor, Rovi Performers: Corey Taylor – Vocals; Joel Ekman – Drums; Josh Rand – Guitar |

Grinding Stone $19.19 Grinding Stone is hard to place musically in Gary Moore’s early, pretty varied career, but fits somewhere in between Colosseum II and Skid Row. In any case, as well as being his solo debut, it is one of Gary Moore’s most overlooked albums. A description of the music could be something as seemingly self contradictory as experimental boogie rock, but on the album Moore explores a number of styles, from the title track’s instrumental boogie rock to soulful vocals in “Sail Across the Mountain” and 17 minutes of guitar and keyboard excursions in the surprisingly funky “Spirit.” In some ways Grinding Stone gives a taste of what would be heard from Colosseum II a few years later, but if the word fusion can be used here, it is not in the generic sense. The album is far from well held together though, and the quality of the songs vary wildly. It may not be an album for the casual metal fan, it is not representative for Moore and it is not his best album. But never again would Moore try such an eclectic mix, and the highly personal and mostly instrumental blues heard on Grinding Stone (for at the core, deep down, it is blues) is not only quite unique, but also far more interesting than the hit list blues he would play in the ’90s, and more creative than most of the British blues rock heard in 1973. ~ Lars Lovén, Rovi Performers: Frank Boylan – Bass; Gary Moore – Guitar, Vocals; Jan Schelhaas – Keyboards; John Curtis – Bass; Pearse Kelly – Percussion, Drums; Philip Donnelly – Guitar |

Spirit In Stone $8.78 After debuting in 1999 with the all-star Quannum Spectrum record, the Quannum label wasn’t releasing enough albums to qualify as anything other than a boutique label; Lifesavas’ wide-release LP was actually the first from a non-Quannum-connected artist. Spearheaded by Blackalicious’ Chief Xcel, Spirit in Stone reveals a heavily spiritual hip-hop crew with plenty of talent. Producer Jumbo the Garbageman creates some warm, hard-hitting tracks heavy on the soul samples, and main rapper Vursatyl expands his De La Soul influence to don several guises, from a politically and spiritually conscious intelligent rapper to a smooth-flow master to a Rasta spitter. Gift of Gab, always a great addition to an optimistic message track, drops a batch of twisting rhymes for “Livin’ Time/Life: Movement 1,” and the full Quannum crew unites for the scratch symphony “Emerge.” Lifesavas need more work to hit the same high peak as Blackalicious, but they already possess one of the rarest traits to find in hip-hop — the ability to write on intriguing subjects, no matter the mic skills or sample digging. For evidence, listen to the hilarious “Hellohihey,” on which Vursatyl runs through a collection of rap-group character lessons, from a metaphysical, cartoonish Voltron of a hip-hop crew to an arrogant, greater-than-thou rapper. ~ John Bush, Rovi |

Hard Labour $18.11 Mrs. Thornley (Liz Smith) leads a rather miserable existence in Salford. She lives with her husband, Jim (Clifford Kershaw), a night custodian at a toy factory, and their grown daughter, Ann (Polly Hemingway). Mrs. Thornley is a maid who works for an imperious upper-middle class woman, Mrs. Stone (Vanessa Harris). Between her work and her home life, it seems like Mrs. Thornley is always cooking, cleaning, and fielding complaints. Jim spends most of his spare time at the pub, and is pretty cold to his wife, drunkenly demanding sex from her once a week on the night he’s not working. Jim’s efforts to ingratiate himself to his supervisor, Mr. Shaw (Keith Washington), are met with a stony lecture about dressing properly on the job. Ann, meanwhile, has been spending her time trying to arrange an abortion for her friend Julie (Linda Beckett) with the help of a friendly Pakistani taxi driver, Naseem (an early turn by Ben Kingsley). The couple’s son, Edward (Bernard Hill, who would later play Theoden in Lord of the Rings) seems to care about his mum, but his wife, Veronica (Alison Steadman, in the first of many performances for writer/director Mike Leigh), is a snob who constantly harangues him about his manners and looks down on his family. Mrs. Thornley, beaten down by her wearying existence, eventually seeks solace from a local priest. Hard Labour, Leigh’s follow-up to Bleak Moments, was originally produced for the BBC’s Play for Today series. It features an appearance by Alan Erasmus (who would become a major figure in the Manchester pop scene), portrayed by Lennie James in Michael Winterbottom’s 24 Hour Party People. ~ Josh Ralske, Rovi |

The Hard Way $14.38 Although his commercial fortunes had not yet matched theirs by the time this album was released, James Hunter had been promoting the revival of classic-era soul for a couple decades before fellow Brits Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Joss Stone came along. His command of the idiom has never been less than thorough and convincing — without knowing that the songs on The Hard Way were newly recorded, anyone might guess that this retro feast was a long-lost gem from 1966. Hunter’s voice is equal parts grits and silk, somewhere between Sam Cooke smooth and Bobby “Blue” Bland scorched, and his small combo of sympathetic players could easily have found work in the studios of Hi, Stax, or Chess back when this style reigned. Compared to Hunter’s last, 2006’s Grammy-nominated People Gonna Talk, The Hard Way, his debut for Hear Music, is a tad tougher — the horns are more prominent and sharper, Hunter’s guitar has more bite to it, and the rhythms cut deeper — and quicker; at times Hunter veers closer to soul-rock than he has in the past, but he’s still working well within his favorite genre. Hunter, as always, is a riveting vocalist — his singing grabs and never lets go. He handles both the lazy, bluesy tunes and the sweatier uptempo R&B with equal commitment and style, sounding as natural as can be as he tells his tales of love and the lack of it. On the slinky blues ballad “‘Til the End,” one of a few tunes on which he is joined by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint, Hunter takes his time spilling out his doomsday scenario of a relationship gone down while the drums, bass, and horns lope along minimally. When he unfurls his brief guitar solo midway, it’s economical but searing. On the rocking “Jacqueline” a doo-woppy chorus and squalling sax fill in the holes, and for the title track, a Cooke ringer, the Echo Strings add muscle and sass to the arrangement. Dancefloor denizens once ached for tunes this beat-crazy and would do well to reacquaint themselves with the real deal via James Hunter. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, Rovi Performers: B.J. Cole – Pedal Steel; Dave Priseman – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; George Chandler – Vocals (Background); Jennymay Logan – Viola, Violin; Tony Woollard – Cello; Allen Toussaint – Vocals (Background), Piano (Electric), Piano; Damian Hand – Sax (Tenor); Ellen Blair – Violin; |

The group’s two major hits, “Everything Zen” and “Little Things,” are slick, assured professional replications of Nirvana’s trademarks, but Bush also have a flair for big hooks and in Gavin Rossdale a frontman who has movie star charisma, all elements that turn Sixteen Stone into successful pop-grunge. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Caroline Dale – Cello; Gavyn Wright – Viola, Violin; Vincas Bundza – Harmonica; Alessandro Vittorio Tateo – Vocals; Dave Guy Parsons – Bass; Gavin Rossdale – Vocals, Guitar; Jasmine Lewis – Vocals; Nigel Pulsford – Guitar; Robin Goodridge – Drums; |

The Janus Stone $12.49 Ruth Galloway’s expertise is called upon when builders, demolishing an old house in Norwich, uncover the bones of a child – minus the skull – beneath a doorway. Is it some ritual sacrifice or just plain straightforward murder? DCI Harry Nelson investigates. The house was once a children’s home. Nelson traces the Catholic priest who used to run the place. He tells him that two children did go missing forty years before – a boy and a girl. They were never found. When carbon dating proves that the child’s bones predate the home and relate to a time when the house was privately owned, Ruth is drawn ever more deeply into the case. But as spring turns into summer it becomes clear that someone is trying hard to put her off the scent by frightening her to death … |

Turn to Stone $9.58 Even though Pentagram released no new albums in 2002, the year turned out to be big for the doom metal godfathers. First came the grail-like First Daze Here compilation of their hard to find ’70s material (issued on Relapse), followed months later by this collection of songs from the band’s ’80s and ’90s Peaceville releases. Of the two, this one is far less earth-shattering, as this material has already been widely available, but for listeners who are still somewhat new to the band and don’t already have the Peaceville albums, this is ideal. There are 17 tracks — six from Relentless, five from Day of Reckoning, and six from Be Forewarned — totaling nearly 80 minutes in all. (A couple of the songs here, “20 Buck Spin” and “When the Screams Come,” actually appear on First Daze Here, meaning they were anywhere from ten to 15 years old or older by the time these versions were recorded.) Pentagram’s basic sound changed little from the ’70s to the ’80s and ’90s, keeping the emphasis on blues-based, slow- to medium-tempo hard rock/metal with nods to Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Cream, and early Led Zeppelin, among others. Because of this consistency in sound, it doesn’t really matter that the songs aren’t in chronological order, as there is still a natural flow to this disc (something that has not always been the case with Peaceville’s other compilations, such as Darkthrone’s Preparing for War, for example). Also worth noting is that although these recordings don’t have that authentic early-’70s haze of the First Daze Here material, they’re not over-produced either and they don’t sound dated. For those who already own Relentless, Day of Reckoning, and Be Forewarned, there is no reason to buy this, but otherwise, this well-assembled compilation is a great value. ~ William York, Rovi Performers: Bobby Liebling – Vocals; Joe Hasselvander – Drums; Martin Swaney – Bass; Victor Griffin – Guitar |

Behind Stone Walls $7.33 Priscilla Dean was one of the major star names of the early 1920s. By the time the all-talking quickie Behind Stone Walls was made, however, Ms. Dean was taking any job she could get. Here she plays an adulterous wife who kills her lover. Eddie Nugent, Dean’s loyal stepson, confesses to the crime himself and is carted off to prison, but eventually the real murderer’s conscious gets the better of her. Top billing in Behind Stone Walls is bestowed upon Robert Elliot, who plays (as ever) the hard-nosed investigating detective. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Black Stone Cherry $11.87 The debut album from youthful Kentucky rockers Black Stone Cherry meanders comfortably somewhere between metal and Southern rock. Black Stone Cherry has what it takes to be considered hard rock and Southern rock. Songs with titles like “Lonely Train,” “Tired of the Rain,” and “Rollin’ On” and their somewhat predictable lyrics land the formula of Southern rock. Heavy distortion and gritty, brooding vocals reminiscent of Godsmack’s Sully Erna lay down the format for alternative metal. Black Stone Cherry does what a lot of bands in the new century of alternative metal would like to — find a new sound. The album never gets boring and is full of great riffs and a thunderous rhythm section. Lead singer Chris Robertson’s vocals are surprisingly mature and soulful and the band’s lead guitar (Robertson and Ben Wells) is impressive. “Shapes of Things,” a cover of the Yardbirds chestnut, is a standout on the album. The tone, the rhythm, and the vocals are unique — and if Black Stone Cherry keeps heading in this direction, the band will surely be able to separate itself from the influx of other bands who have been riding on the post-grunge alternative metal circuit since the ’90s. The same goes for “Tired of the Rain,” which features some of the best guitar work on the album, from a choppy riff to blues-infused licks and solo — it’s anything but bland. The real clincher of this song, as well as with “Rollin’ On,” is the use of a B-3 organ from guest artist Reece Wynans. It has all the charm of nostalgia, without being boring or forced. There’s no doubt that Black Stone Cherry has talent, and they are onto something. Black Stone Cherry proves the band is diverse in their influences and goals. The Southern rock twist and the occasional Merle Haggard reference are a really solid start, but at times, the album comes across as a little too generic for what the band is capable of. Black Stone Cherry has more in them than to become just another alternative metal band in the now very post-grunge era. ~ Megan Frye, Rovi Performers: Reese Wynans – Organ (Hammond); Ben Wells – Sitar (Electric), Guitar (Rhythm), Vocals (Background), Guitar; Chris Robertson – Guitar (Rhythm), Slide Guitar, Vocals, Guitar; John Fred Young – Vocals (Background), Percussion, Drums; Jon Lawhon – Rhythm Bass, Vocals (Background), Bass |

Rolling Stone Presents: Blues $5.58 It’s hard not to look at the ten songs that comprise Rolling Stone presents Blues and think that this is the reason why so many blues fans are disenchanted with the state of contemporary blues. This is what most modern listeners think of when they think of the blues — slick, stylized blues-rock, played either by veterans of the British Invasion or hippie chicks or boozy blooze bands or young virtuosos only interested in soloing. Apart from two classic cuts from Albert King and John Lee Hooker (actually, the latter isn’t particularly well-known, it just dates from the ’50s), that’s what’s here — a lot of glossy, bluesy arena rock. There are some good cuts here — the aforementioned King and Hook, plus Robert Cray’s “Phone Booth,” an early Fleetwood Mac cover of “Shake Your Moneymaker,” Clapton’s “Blues Before Sunrise” from 1994, the Fabulous Thunderbirds’ sleek “Tuff Enuff” — but it’s misleading to call this the blues, and the sad fact is many listeners (especially new converts to Rolling Stone magazine) do believe this is real blues, and it’s unfortunate this disc perpetuates that falsehood. Especially since it contains “Bad to the Bone.” ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Queens of the Stone Age $31.99 Instead of trying to recreate the sound of his former band Kyuss, Josh Homme took a new approach to music. He crafted tight hard rock songs that were heavy on melody and light on vocals. While there is still a lot of fuzz coming from the amplifiers, the vocals are softly interwoven among the chords. There’s no screaming or rock & roll antics, and the group takes an almost lo-fi attitude to heavy metal — an interesting combination that produced instant radio gems like “Regular John,” the extreme ranges on “Avon,” and the smoky, blues-influenced “Walkin’ on the Sidewalks.” Queens of the Stone Age are creating a new blend of heavy metal that makes it acceptable to produce creative music that doesn’t rely on testosterone as the driving force. ~ David Thomas, Rovi |

London Stone [Bonus Tracks] $11.02 If you were to take any three albums by the Bevis Frond and reshuffle the tracks, you could easily come up with two albums of brilliant material and one album that shouldn’t be released. One of those discs would be tough, hard-rocking, and poetic, the other wistfully bleak electric folk. The third release, the one that would never see the light of day, would be derivative psychedelia that shows promise but never quite delivers. The good news is that London Stone would have a lot of selections on the first two albums and only one or two tracks for the third. Among the hard-rocking highlights are the organ-driven “Still Trying” and the incredible “Coming Round,” which ranks with the best up-tempo tracks Nick Saloman has ever laid down. It’s hard to imagine that both parts of that sinuous, muscular guitar duel were played by the same guy, who is also tossing in the tasty bass work, but that’s the genius of Saloman in the studio. “And Now She’s Gone” approaches the same level of emotional impact in a more straightforward way, with punk rock intensity and lyrical simplicity carried by Saloman’s expressive voice. There are one or two highlights from the sensitive, folk-driven side of the Bevis Frond too, notably “Lord of Nothing” and the unusually empathetic “On a Liquid Wheel.” It’s hard to figure the exact nature of the title metaphor in this story of a merry has-been, but listeners don’t really need to know. What matters is that it’s a lively and compassionate character study and a great piece of music, one of several highlights in an album with lots of them to go around. [The record was reissued in 2005 with the addition of six bonus tracks, including the demos for "Coming Round" and "And Now She's Gone."] ~ Richard Foss, Rovi Performers: Barry Dransfield – Violin; Martin Crowley – Drums; Nick Saloman – Various, Guitar, Vocals |

Stone Cold Classics $11.14 It seemed like as good a moment as any for Hollywood Records to release a new Queen compilation: the recent Queen + Paul Rodgers tour, live album, American Idol appearance, and PBS concert special/DVD were generating plenty of publicity. There is already a slew of Queen compilations available, and given all this recent activity, one might expect a record company to release yet another in the hopes of cashing in, but Stone Cold Classics is still a good best-of disc. However, this album isn’t a particularly well-rounded sampling of Queen’s discography. Though no one could deny that these are all strong and important songs for any Queen fan or curious newcomer, it is odd that classics like “Killer Queen,” “Under Pressure,” and “I Want to Break Free” are mysteriously absent. With the singular exception of “These Are the Days of Our Lives,” every song on Stone Cold Classics represents the hard rock side of Queen’s repertoire. This is undoubtedly an area of strength for Queen, but by no means the group’s only one. Especially with 1997’s Rocks compilation taken into account, a greatest-hits CD featuring an 11-song smattering of the band’s most well-known rock hits seems redundant, but the bonus tracks included at the end of the disc are very telling. Two live tracks of Queen and Paul Rodgers playing “All Right Now” and “Feel Like Makin’ Love” — hits the frontman made popular with ’70s rock outfits Free and Bad Company — serve as reminders of why this disc was released in the first place. Rodgers’ raspy take on arena rock singing makes for an altogether heavy sound when he and Queen collaborate, one that isn’t very well suited to the band’s lighter material. Thusly, assuming that the selections on Stone Cold Classics were made in order to draw in new listeners to the original Queen recordings, then these tracks may well be the best possible choices. For potential fans whose first Queen experience has been with the new lineup — and very likely during their appearance on American Idol — this mix will create an easy transition from the new to the old. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi |
